vfds | voordouw fenske design studio argues for architecture that merges local materials and expressive building form, with innovative construction methods and building expertise.

We believe in an architecture of enjoyment. We value public space, the sidewalk, and street as important social connector implicit in building resilient, social, livable communities. Our buildings aim to connect people to each other, to the landscape, understanding the gradient of private to public space as a layered, social node.

Our design interests include alternative solutions to single stair projects, emerging modern methods of construction (MMC), and novel industrial/panelized systems. We see the integration of landscape and architecture as a means of providing vibrant, healthy urban environments which seek to address three key concerns: our demand for denser forms of family-oriented, urban housing, our on-going environmental concerns, and our need for a proactive, innovative approach to design practice and contemporary construction.

vfds specializes in landscapes using local, drought-resistant plants that form diverse, picturesque environments.

In the residential context, landscape is understood as an extension of the home, a series of outdoor rooms that provide additional living, leisure and entertaining spaces. In larger-scale, commercial work, planting is imagined as a living screen creating a restful separation of working and living spaces from the surrounding city.
